I was lucky when I started teaching to work with an excellent and very dedicated group of educators in the Humanities Faculty in a large Comprehensive in Rotherham in the UK; one of the teachers who passed through this faculty (and was part of the Business and Economics Department) is the Author of the rather excellent Essential Guide to Classroom Practice. (200+ strategies for outstanding teaching and learning) which is written by Andew Redfern (that's my personal interest declared). This book is a must read or the wealth of ideas it contains.
Who is this book for?
The books states in the introduction that it is for
This book then is for me on two different levels!
What do we get?
This book and the ideas in it are grounded on evidence (references to Hattie and other research) and it has a chapter on each of the following key ideas.
Each chapter has a lot of detail and gives many activities that can be used (with some resources on its own website http://essentialteachingandlearning.com/).
There are so many activities documented in this book, there are bound to be some new ones that even a very seasoned teacher might not have tried before; this then is the value of this book! Read it through once and get some new ideas to slot into your lessons where you might want to try something a little different OR you can just dip into it from time to time when you want to try injecting a focus on any of the six key areas that this books covers!
The only thing I might like to see would be a greater focus on the use of educational technology (but as this section would be almost impossible to keep up to day, I can see why this topic is integrated to some of the other chapters and does not have a chapter in its own right).
Overall, I loved this book and the ideas in it and will be using some (probably many) over the coming year. This books goes well with The Teacher's Toolkit: Raise Classroom Achievement with Strategies for Every Learner BUT I think this book is better which I think is praise indeed!
Pick up a copy as soon as you can and prepare some more inspirational ideas.
